What is a Transfer Shower?

A transfer shower is a type of shower stall designed to facilitate easy transfer from a wheelchair to a shower seat or bench. These showers are an essential component of accessible bathrooms, ensuring that individuals with mobility challenges can maintain their independence and personal hygiene.

ADA Compliance for Transfer Showers

To meet ADA compliance, transfer showers must adhere to specific guidelines and requirements. ⁽¹⁾ Here are some key ADA codes related to transfer showers ⁽²⁾:

Shower Size: Transfer showers should have clear inside dimensions of at least 36 inches by 36 inches. ⁽¹⁾ This size allows for comfortable wheelchair maneuverability and transfer onto a shower seat or bench. ⁽¹⁾

Clear Floor Space: Maintain a clear floor space in front of the shower, at least 36 inches wide and 48 inches long, to comply with code 608.2.1, allowing users to approach and use the roll-in shower without obstructions. ⁽¹⁾

Shower Thresholds: The shower threshold should be low or even with the bathroom floor to eliminate tripping hazards and comply with code 608.7. ⁽¹⁾ This allows for easy entry and exit for wheelchair users. ⁽¹⁾

Grab Bars: Install grab bars in the shower area to assist users with balance and support during transfers, ensuring they comply with code 609 and in accordance with 608.3. Please note that there are specifications for circular and non-circular cross section grab bars. ⁽¹⁾ ADA guidelines specify the placement, spacing, and height of these bars for optimal accessibility. ⁽¹⁾

Shower Seat: A fold-down shower seat should be provided within the shower compartment and comply with code 610. ⁽¹⁾ The seat's height and positioning should conform to ADA standards to accommodate users comfortably. ⁽¹⁾

Shower Controls: Faucet controls and showerheads should be within reach for users in wheelchairs or on shower seats in accordance with code 608.5. ⁽¹⁾ Controls should be operable with minimal effort and force. ⁽¹⁾

Anti-Scald Protection: Install anti-scald devices to maintain safe water temperatures and delivery at no more than 120°F (49°C) maximum for users. ⁽¹⁾

Handheld Showerhead: Including a handheld showerhead with an adjustable height is recommended in code 608.6 for added convenience and flexibility. ⁽¹⁾
